| biography:
| US politician, born in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at Emory and Tulane universities, then taught history at West Georgia College, and was elected as Republican representative for Georgia in 1979. He became Speaker of the House in 1995 with the promise of enacting a new conservative agenda, but resigned in November 1998 following the poor performance of his party in the mid-term elections. He has also written or co-authored several books, beginning with Window of Opportunity (with Marianne Gingrich and David Drake), Contract with America (with Dick Armey), To Renew America, Lessons Learned the Hard Way (1998), and a fiction work, 1945 (with William Fortschen). |
