| Chemist, born in Oxford, Oxfordshire, SC England, UK. He studied science and classics at Oxford, where in 1901 he became professor of chemistry. He is known for his work on molecular structure and his formulation of a theory of valency. His greatest contribution was to compile much work done by others into a coherent and unified account which clarified old ideas and pointed the way to new ones. He was awarded the Royal Society's Royal Medal in 1937. |
