| biography:
| Writer, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Nescio (Latin ‘I don't know’) worked for the Holland–Bombay Trading Company, and became its director in 1926. His work shows the opposition of the unpractical dreaming artist on one side and the self-important, settled citizen on the other. With irony and pain he also describes the anarchist, idealist youth that may become this good citizen. His style is unparallelled, simple, and clear, without any frills. Although he wrote little, he is considered a major 20th-c writer in Dutch literature. |
