| Writer, born in London, UK. She was educated at a French convent, and began her literary career by writing poetry, having met the Rossettis and their friends. She is best remembered for her children's stories, which reacted against the moralizing then prevalent. They include The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1899), The Would-be-Goods (1901), and The Railway Children (1906, filmed 1970). She also wrote novels and ghost stories. |
