| Paediatrician, born in Waco, Texas, USA. One of the first women to become a full professor of paediatrics, she spent her career at the New York University medical school (1930–91). A pulmonary and paediatrics specialist, she studied the effects of steroids on tuberculosis and was the first to use the drug rifampin to treat the disease.
