| Baritone, born in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. After working at various jobs, he won a contest to sing with the Philadelphia Civic Opera. A concert tour and radio appearances in the early 1930s led to a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and he proceeded to make a series of operetta-style films with Jeanette MacDonald, including Naughty Marietta (1935) and Rose Marie (1936). Extremely popular in their day, they were billed ‘America's Sweethearts’. After their last film, I Married an Angel (1942), his career faltered, although he continued to tour and sing. He died after collapsing while on stage in Australia. |
