| Astronaut, born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, USA. He studied at Purdue University, then became a fighter pilot in Korea and later a civilian test pilot. In 1962 he was chosen as an astronaut and commanded Gemini 8 in 1966. In 1969 with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins he set out in Apollo 11 on a successful Moon-landing expedition. On 20 July 1969 Armstrong and Aldrin became in that order the first men to set foot on the Moon. Armstrong later taught aerospace engineering at Cincinnati University (1971–9). He published First on the Moon in 1970. |
