| Farm labourer from Leicestershire, C England, UK. It is not known whether he really existed, but legend has it that he destroyed some stocking frames about 1782, and it is from him that the Luddite rioters (1812–18) took their name, in their quest to destroy machinery which was displacing their work as craftsmen. |
