| Macedonian general, originally from Crete. He settled in Amphipolis during the reign of Philip II of Macedon, and became the companion of the young Alexander the Great. In 330 BC he became Governor of Lycia, and in 329 joined Alexander in Bactria with a body of Greek mercenaries, and took part in the Indian campaigns. Having built a fleet on the Hydaspes (Jhelum), Alexander gave Nearchus the command. He left the Indus in November 325, and, skirting the coast, reached Susa in February 324. His narrative is preserved in the Indica of Arrian. |
