| biography:
| Actress, born in London, UK. She studied dance as a child, and was a chorus girl before graduating to leading roles and making her film debut in 1930. Under the tutelage of director Herbert Wilcox (1892–1977), who became her husband in 1943, she emerged as a major star of historical film dramas such as Victoria, the Great (1937), Odette (1950), and The Lady With the Lamp (1951). A series of musicals opposite Michael Wilding made her Britain's top box-office attraction, but she retired from the screen in 1958. She retained the affection of British audiences with appearances in such theatrical candyfloss as Charlie Girl (1965–71), No, No, Nanette (1973), and My Fair Lady (1978–9). She was created a dame in 1969. |
