| English playwright. He studied at Cambridge, failed as an actor, and produced nine or ten tragedies, marked by their extravagance of speech, between 1675 and 1682. His best-known play is The Rival Queens (1677), and with Dryden he wrote Oedipus (1678), and The Duke of Guise (1682). He lost his sanity and was confined to Bedlam for several years (1684–9, 1691). |
