| biography:
| Lutheran archbishop, born in Trönö, Sweden. He studied at Uppsala, and was ordained in 1893. He was Lutheran minister of the Swedish Church in Paris, and became professor of history of religion at Uppsala (1901) and Leipzig (1912). In 1914 he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala and Primate of the Swedish Lutheran Church. A leader in the ecumenical movement, he wrote several works on comparative religion, and was the principal promoter of the Life and Work movement. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1930. |
