| Judge, born in Rumney, New Hampshire, USA. He served in the US House of Representatives (Democrat, Maine, 1839–43). He was appointed attorney general (1846) by President James Polk, who sent him to negotiate an end to the Mexican War (1848). President James Buchanan named him to the US Supreme Court (1858–81). |
