| biography:
| Soviet dissident, born in Donetsk, SE Ukraine. A brilliant mathematician disillusioned with Soviet society, he applied for a visa to emigrate to Israel (1973). This was repeatedly refused, he was harassed by the KGB, and in 1977 was sentenced to 13 years in a labour colony for allegedly spying on behalf of the CIA. Released in 1986 as part of an East–West ‘spy’ exchange, he joined his wife in Israel, where he assumed his new name. In 1989 he was nominated as Israeli ambassador to the UN. |
