| Literary critic, born in Aosta, Valle d'Aosta, NW Italy. A follower of Benedetto Croce at first, he then came to accept Marxist historicism and specialized in early Italian literature (Il Trecento, 1933) and Dante (La critica dantesca dal 1921 a oggi, 1956). He also wrote the very popular Compendio di storia della letteratura italiana (1936–47) and edited, with Emilio Cecchi, Storia della letteratura italiana (1965–9). |
