| biography:
| Poet and short-story writer, born in Sevilla, SW Spain. A member of Valera's tertulia, and friend of Bécquer, he was influenced by the classical tradition from Virgil through Luis de León, and equally by the Romanticism of Zorilla and Espronceda. He taught literature in Cádiz (1865–9) and then in Madrid, where he edited El Museo Universal. His Memoria y teoría del estilo (1865) and Retórica y poética (1871) date from this period. His verses were spontaneous, eclectic, but essentially mediocre. They include Poesías (1858) and Nuevas poesías (1867), which were supplemented by Cartas y poesías inéditas (1923). He also wrote a number of short stories, ten of which are included in the collection Cuentos y chascarillos andaluces (1896), Una docena de cuentos (1879), Nuevos cuentos (1881), and Cuentos y sucedidos (1891). |
