| biography:
| Playwright, born in Madrid, Spain. He wrote over 40 plays, some Romantic in a style not far removed from that of José Zorrilla, as in El reloj de San Plácido (1858) or the earlier Con el diablo a cuchilladas (1854), some costumbrista in manner, and some influenced by Spanish classical drama. He also adapted a number of Golden Age plays, such as Tirso de Molina's Amar por señas. Serra is best remembered for plays on Cervantes, El loco de la guardilla. Paso que pasó en el siglo XVI (1863) and its sequel El bien tardío (1867), for La boda de Quevedo (1854), and for ¡Don Tomás! (1858), though all his plays are hastily written, lose a great deal in the reading, are unequal in quality, and vulgar in tone. His poetry was collected in Poesías líricas (1848) and Leyendas, cuentos y poesías (1876). |
