| Lebanese soldier and statesman, born in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He studied law at Beirut University and the Sorbonne, and in 1978 became leader of Amal (‘Hope’), a branch of the Shiite nationalist movement founded by Iman Musa Sadr. Backed by Syria, it became the main Shiite military force in West Beirut and Southern Lebanon during the country's civil wars, until its defeat in 1988. He joined the Lebanese government in 1984 as minister of justice, and in 1992 became president of the National Assembly. |
