| Physicist, born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He performed research at the University of Birmingham (1961–3) and the University of California, San Diego (1963–4), before joining Cornell (1964). A theoretical and solid-state physicist, he criticized the Nobel Prize system for fostering competition among scientists rather than encouraging pure research (1989). |
