| Explorer of Africa, born in Foulshiels, Scottish Borders, SE Scotland, UK. He became a surgeon at Edinburgh, and in 1792 served on an expedition to Sumatra. In 1795–6 he made a journey along the Niger R, as recounted in Travels in the Interior of Africa (1799). He settled as a surgeon in Peebles, then in 1805 undertook another journey to the Niger. The expedition reached Bussa, where he was drowned following an attack by natives. |
