| Novelist, critic, and man of letters, born in Peshawar, modern Pakistan. He left India for Britain, where he eventually published his first novel, Untouchable (1935), with a preface by E M Forster. His novels, such as The Coolie (1936) and The Village (1939, the first of a trilogy) promote the underdog in society, depicting life in the poverty-stricken Punjab. He later began an ambitious seven-volume autobiographical work of fiction, The Seven Ages of Man. Recent work includes Conversations in Bloomsbury (1996). |
