| biography:
| King of Lesotho (1966–90, 1994–6). He studied at Oxford, was installed as Paramount Chief of the Basotho people (1960), and proclaimed king when Lesotho became independent six years later. His desire for political involvement led to his being twice placed under house arrest, and in 1970 an eight-month exile in The Netherlands ended when Moshoeshoe agreed to take no further part in the country's politics. A military coup in 1986 replaced the government with a military council with the king as nominal executive head. When Moshoeshoe refused to sanction certain changes in 1990, he was forced to abdicate in favour of his son, Letsie III, but returned as king in 1994. |
