| biography:
| Merchant and manufacturer, born in Jonesboro, Tennessee, USA. In Baltimore he worked for the wholesale grocery business owned by his father, Herman Cone, and in 1891 he left to form the Cone Export & Commission Co in New York City, a marketer of Southern cloth mill-goods. When the company grew to 40 clients, his father dissolved his grocery business and joined Moses. In 1893 they moved to Greensboro, NC, where Moses built a denim mill (1895). In 1901 he bought a 3750 acre estate at Blowing Rock, NC and began raising apple trees. |
