| Writer and editor, born in Lorain, Ohio, USA. She studied at Howard University (1953 BA) and Cornell (1955 MA), and taught English at Texas Southern University (1955–7) and at Howard (1957–64). Later posts include the State University of New York, Purchase (1971–2), Albany (1984–9), and Princeton (1989). She married Harold Morrison in 1958 (divorced 1964), and became a senior editor for Random House in New York City (1965). Her novels, which capture the deep passions and rhythms of African-American life, include Sula (1973), Song of Solomon (1977), and Beloved (1987, Pulitzer). Recognized as a major American novelist, respected by critics and readers alike, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. Later novels include Jazz (1993) and Paradise (1998). |
