| Chemist, born in London, UK. He studied at London and Nancy universities, and became an authority on glass technology. Professor at Bristol (1903–37), he was also technical consultant to the ministry of supply (1940–5). He discovered, with Ramsay, the inert gases krypton, xenon, and neon (1894–1908), and investigated the phenomena of low temperatures. |
