| biography:
| French Huguenot leader and polemicist, born in Buhy, NW France. Converted to Protestantism in 1560, he was nicknamed the ‘Pope of the Huguenots’ for his role in the Wars of Religion (1562–98). An adviser to Coligny and Henry of Navarre, he established the first Protestant academy at Saumur. Because of his influence and his political theories of resistance he became widely known as the ‘Pope of the Huguenots’. He undertook many embassies for the Protestant cause; however, he lost the king's favour after Henry's conversion to Catholicism (1593) and played no further part in national affairs. |
