| Philosopher, one of the leaders of the Vienna Circle of logical positivists, born in Berlin, Germany. He studied physics at Heidelberg, Lausanne, and Berlin, taught at Rostock and Kiel, and from 1922 was professor of inductive sciences at Vienna. An early exponent of Einstein's relativity theories, his major works include Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre (1918, General Theory of Knowledge) and Fragen der Ethik (1930, Problems of Ethics). He was shot down on the steps of the university by a deranged student. |
