| biography:
| Egyptian statesman and president (1970–81), born in the Tala district, N Egypt. He trained for the army in Cairo, and in 1952 was a member of the Free Officers who executed the coup which deposed King Farouk. After becoming president, he temporarily assumed the post of prime minister (1973–4), after which he sought settlement of the conflict with Israel. He recovered the Suez Canal Zone from Israel and established close relations with the USA. He met the Israeli premier in Jerusalem (1977) and at Camp David, USA, in 1978, and the same year he and Begin were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Sadat's initiative led to the signing of a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in 1979. Following bitter criticism by other Arab statesmen and hard-line Muslims, he was assassinated in Cairo by extremists. |
