| Pakistani soldier and president (1958–69), born in Hazara, EC Pakistan (formerly India). He studied at Aligarh Moslem University, trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, and became commander-in-chief of Pakistan's army (1951) and a field marshal (1959). He became president after a bloodless army coup, and established a stable economy and political autocracy. In 1969, after widespread civil disorder, he relinquished power and martial law was re-established. |
