| Physicist, born in Brodhead, Wisconsin, USA. He taught and carried on research at Cornell (1934–8), then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1938–70). Concurrently he consulted and performed atomic research at Brookhaven, (1946–8), Harvard (1956–67), the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (1967–70), and Los Alamos (1950–86). A lifelong leader in atomic particle accelerator design, he developed the first cyclotron with Ernest Lawrence in 1931. |
