| Film director, born in Caslav, C Czech Republic. Two feature films, Lásky jedné plavovlásky (1965, Loves of a Blonde) and Hoři, má panenko (1967, The Firemen's Ball), made in Prague, brought him international recognition. Being abroad at the time of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion, he went to the USA, where he became a US citizen. His tragi-comedy of insanity, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), won five Oscar awards, and was successfully followed by his interpretations of stage presentations, Hair (1979), Ragtime (1980), and Amadeus (1983, Oscar). Later films include The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996, Oscar nomination) and Man on the Moon (1999). |
