| biography:
| Graphic designer, born in London, UK. He studied at Goldsmith's College, London. He founded with Misha Black the Industrial Design Partnership (1935) and the Design Research Unit (1945). He worked for the ministry of information during World War 2 and was involved in two major exhibitions, ‘Britain Can Make It’ (1946) and the ‘Festival of Britain’ (1951). Although he designed in other fields, such as ceramics and furniture, he is best known for his co-ordinated ‘corporate identity’ schemes for such organizations as Ilford, Austin Reed, ICI, Gilbey, and British Rail. He became a royal designer for industry in 1937. |
