| biography:
| Poet, born in Liberty, Indiana, USA. He settled in the Old West after practising law in Oregon. A flamboyant character, at one time he owned a newspaper and a pony express, and took the name Joaquin from a Mexican brigand. After a brief spell in the UK, where he was much admired, he settled in California from 1877 as a fruit-grower. His best-known poem is ‘Columbus’, with the familiar refrain ‘On, sail on!’. His other works include Songs of the Sierras (1871) and The Danites in the Sierras (1881). |
