| Bible scholar, born in York, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, was ordained priest in 1514, and joined the Augustinian Friars at Cambridge, but was converted to Protestantism. His own translation of the Bible appeared in 1535 (the first complete one in English), and he then superintended the work which led to the ‘Great Bible’ (1539). He also edited the work known as ‘Cranmer's Bible’ (1540). Forced to live abroad for several years, he returned to England in 1548 and became Bishop of Exeter in 1551. On Queen Mary's accession he went abroad again, but returned in 1559 to live in London. |
