| Biochemist and biophysicist, born in New York City, New York, USA. She performed research at Cornell (1938–46), then moved to Washington University (St Louis, Missouri) (1946–60). Joining the University of Pennsylvania (1960–82), she remained active after retirement, serving the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia (1982–5) and lecturing as a visiting professor at various institutions. She made major advances in enzymology, the use of stable isotopes in metabolic studies, and in biophysical investigations of electron spin and nuclear magnetic resonance. |
