| biography:
| Scientist and linguistic reformer, born in Denisovka, N Russia. He studied at St Petersburg, then at Marburg in Germany under the philosopher Christian von Wolff. He became professor of chemistry at St Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1745, where he set up the first chemical laboratory in Russia, and in 1755 he founded Moscow University. His writings include works on rhetoric, grammar, and Russian history, and his greatest contribution to Russian culture was his systematization of the grammar and orthography. |
