| Ballet dancer, teacher, and director, born in Moscow, Russia. After graduating from the Bolshoi Ballet School in 1899, he became soloist and then ballet master of the company. His career in the West was launched with his appearance in Diaghilev's 1909 Paris season, from which he went on to tour with Anna Pavlova. After touring the USA with his own group, he returned to the Bolshoi in 1912, becoming director in 1917. The October Revolution sent him back to the USA, where he settled and became a pioneer of American ballet. He became best known for his teaching, with such stars as Judy Garland and Katharine Hepburn among his pupils. |
