| biography:
| Painter and designer, born in Ladyzhino, W Russia. She began as a science student but turned to sculpture c.1898, studying at the Moscow Academy of Art. She started to paint in 1904 and, liking the flat colours and primitive forms of Russian folk art, combined these with the new influences of Cubism and Fauvism. She moved to Geneva in 1915 with her husband Larionov to design for Diaghilev's ballets, and went to Paris in 1921. She took French nationality in 1938. |
