| biography:
| Philosopher and writer, born in Bilbao, N Spain. He studied at Bilbao and Madrid, became professor of Greek at Salamanca University (1892), and a writer of mystical philosophy, historical studies, essays, travel books, and austere poetry. His main philosophical work is Del sentimiento trágico de la vida en los hombres y en los pueblos (1913, The Tragic Sense of Life in Men and Peoples). He was exiled as a republican in 1924, but reinstated in 1931. As rector of Salamanca, he defied the forces of Franco in the Civil War. |
