| Racing cyclist, born in Villava, N Spain. A talented basketball player, he chose cycling as his career and turned professional in 1982. In 1991 he won the first of five successive Tours de France races (1991–5) becoming the first to achieve this distinction, and in 1996 won an Olympic Gold in the time trial. He retired in 1997. |
