| biography:
| Writer of children's books, critic, and translator, born in Assen, N Netherlands. She spent part of her childhood on Curaçao, the setting of many of her books for children. By choosing controversial and topical subjects for her stories, verse, and historical novels, as well as her non-fiction work for children, she hopes to eliminate prejudice. She has found recognition for her work throughout her career, receiving many national and international prizes, including the Statesprize for children's literature for her whole oeuvre in 1970. |
