| biography:
| Architect and military engineer, born in San Michele, NE Italy. Initially a pupil of his father and uncle, he went to Rome, where he came to be regarded as the successor of Bramante. He was master builder of the cathedral of Orvieto (1509–28), and was employed as military architect for Venice (from 1535). Noted for his treatment of military fortifications, his most important works include the Porta Nuova (1533–40) and the Porta S Zeno (1541). |
