| biography:
| French statesman, born in Aigueperse, C France. He was an advocate of the Politique thesis of state-religion separation and tolerance. He was appointed chancellor (1560), organized the Colloque de Poissy (1561), and published an Edict of Tolerance (1562) to bring peace between the Catholic and Protestant sides. This effort was in vain as the Wars of Religion followed in the same year. He retired in 1568. |
