| biography:
| Organist, harpsichord player, and composer, born in Paris, France. He wrote great ‘versaillais’ motets at the end of the Baroque period. Declared too young for certain posts, he later became master of chamber music to King Louis XIV in 1695, a rapid rise up the social and financial scale. Left a widower by the daughter of the composer Jean Rebel, he married the daughter of a court surgeon. He composed numerous entertainment pieces for Versailles, Marly, Fontainebleau, and Sceaux. His 70 motets were described by Rousseau as ‘masterpieces of the genre’. |
