| French-American writer, born in Caen, NW France. He wrote a number of fascinating essays and books which portrayed life in the New World, including Lettres d'un Cultivateur Américain (1784) and Voyage dans la haute Pennsylvanie et dans L'Etat de New York (1801). Trained by Jesuits, he went to Canada, where he first worked as a mapmaker, and became a farmer in Orange County in 1759. He was later elected to the French Academy of Sciences and became consul to three of the new American states. |
