| Chemist, born in Angers, NW France. He studied chemistry at the Collège de France in Paris, then lectured at the Collège Charlemagne, and became a director of the Gobelins tapestry works. In 1830 he became professor and then director (1864–79) of the Museum of Natural History. His best-known work is on animal fats, soap-making, candle-making, waxes, and natural dyes. Between 1828 and 1864 he studied the psychology of colour, and (when he was over 90) the psychological effects of ageing. |
