| Economist and journalist, born in Łódź, C Poland. He studied engineering in Warsaw and Gdansk, and taught himself economics. He worked at the Institute of Statistics, Oxford (1940–5), then became a UN economist (1946–54), and a government economist and teacher of economics in Poland (1955–67). A Marxist, he was critical of both capitalism and socialism. He developed a theory of macroeconomic dynamics, and introduced the new Western methods in economics to the Soviet bloc. |
