| Biographer, born in London, UK. He was educated at Eton. His first book was Hugh Kingsmill: a critical biography (1964). His two-volume life of Lytton Strachey, The Unknown Years (1967) and The Year of Achievement (1968), is recognized as a landmark in biographical writing. He has written the official biography of George Bernard Shaw, in five volumes: The Search for Love (1988), The Pursuit of Power (1989), The Lure of Fantasy (1991), The Last Laugh and The Shaw Companion (both 1992). He later wrote his autobiography Basil Street Blues (1999). He married the novelist Margaret Drabble in 1982. |
