| Swimmer, born in Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia. He won a gold medal at both the 100 m and 200 m freestyle events at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, and also gained silver and bronze medals with the Australian relay teams. He won 13 medals at the Commonwealth Games, to equal the record for any sport set by the fencer Ivan Lund, including nine golds in the 100 m freestyle in 1966, 1970, and 1974, the 200 m in 1970, and five relays. With his coach Vic Arneil he developed the use of isometric exercises for swimmers as a supplement to pool sessions. |
