| Factory reformer, born in Snelston, Derbyshire, C England, UK. An importer of Irish linen in Leeds, he sat as a Tory MP (1829–32) and wrote copiously on Irish social questions. He was a leader of the factory reform movement, and promoted the Factory Act of 1833, which reduced the working-hours in textile mills for children and young people. |
